On August 15, 2003 the world
took a perilous step backwards in the pursuit of racial equality.
Not since the days of slavery has the world seen such unabashed support
of racism, and to make matters worse, the powers that be have yet
to uncover who is responsible for this recent attack on civil liberities.
I think I was as shocked as any one to turn on my television that
regrettable afternoon and hear the largest news broadcasters in the
world spewing out messages of hate and segregation. I then
picked up the newspaper, and to further my disgust found the headlines
were also endorsing this racist directive - "Black Outs".
How
could this be happening, I thought. Everywhere I turned I heard the
hateful words leak from peoples mouths, "black outs" and
"brown outs". I am always confused when I hear of discrimination
against a group of people, but in the case of the "brown outs"
I was left speechless - why would they single out Sinbad?
I even heard one news broadcasts go as far as to chastise those of
larger proportions, stating "massive black outs" in many
of their reports.
Why wasn't it just yesterday that people of all races could be found
sporting Oakland Raiders Zubaz advertising the slogan "real men
wear black".
Many colleagues that I have approached to discuss this matter claim
that I am misinformed and that this is actually a "power"
issue. A "white power" issue is more like it.
I can only hope that this type of mass media discrimination is a passing
fad and that no harm will ever come to Sinbad.
